This beach is worth the drive and hike to get there! Green Sands Beach also called: Papakōlea Beach is a beach with greenish sand located near South Point, in the Kaʻū district. One of just four green sand beaches known in the World.
The sand is actually a green olive color caused by eruptions from what was once a volcano. The hike to the beach is about 2.2 miles from the top parking lot or if you have a 4×4 vehicle, you can drive down and park right at the beach.
There are many friendly locals who commonly give tourists a ride from the parking area down to the green sand beach in their 4wd vehicles.
The walk to the beach is steep with NO handrails. Watch your step as the ground is not solid. Once you are on the beach you can swim, snorkel, bodyboard, fish , and lay on the green sand.
